Paradiz'd (The Cubiculo in Carlisle, PA)
co-created original piece
Scenery by Mary Olin Geiger
Lighting, Sound, and Projections by Kent Barrett

This devised project began as an exploration of Milton's Paradise Lost. The piece examines the feeling and texture of the epic poem by immersing visitors in an environment that is both familiar and unsettling. The line between performers and audience was obscured by task-oriented, wandering performances that drew focus to many portions of the room at once and showed the "performers" completing mundane duties that (when strung together) seemed to have connection. But the connection was never clear, nor was it always present at all.

Performers were members of the Carlisle community and included work colleagues, friends, and their families.

Materials: This project began as a large-scale exploration of salvage techniques. The majority of materials were donated or found discarded, and we worked with several local businesses to use raw materials that would normally be considered imperfect or excess. The result was an assemblage that unified the indivdiual histories of each material that was used in process. Ink and walnut stains were used on wood and cardboard to reduce the impacts of latex treatments. Following the show, metal, asphalt, wood, architectural elements, and cardboard were all individually recycled or donated to salvage centers.
