I've recently discovered that Kevlar was invented by a woman named Stephanie Kwolek at DuPont in the 1960s. The quilt that I'm working on for a show in Baltimore is made of women's work clothes, and I ordered some kevlar yardage to add to the backing and binding. It is difficult stuff! ... Probably because It's supposed to be laminated with resin and not sewed, but I'm sewing it anyway. It's really beautiful - super slippery and silky. The individual strands are not spun, rather they are simply woven individually, so the fabric has a tendency to fray.
