BIOSPHERE 3 was an audio-guided installation I built with my collaborators in Valley Traction, and it took place over the course of two days at our home outside of Boiling Springs, PA. Biosphere 3 was an experiment in socially-distant performance during the COVID-19 pandemic, and each space made it possible to remain at a safe distance from other attendees, while also having a shared experience. We created an audio walking tour from a nearby park to our property and constructed a series of six large, sculptural “biomes.” It was inspired by Biosphere 2 in Oracle, Arizona which aimed to create a fully-sealed ecological system meant to mimic the various biomes of Earth. The original idea for the project was conceived by “The Theater for All Possibilities,” who assembled a team to complete the gargantuan task of building the 3.14 acre structure between 1984 and 1991. In Biosphere 3, visitors walked among the biomes while listening to the audio tour, which shared writings that examine humanity’s desire to understand and control the natural environment. The biomes were built from bamboo that grows on the property, which was lashed together with simple fabric strips. We combined these structures with other materials we had in close proximity during lockdown or scavenged from nearby areas.
